How to configure Windows XP to manage Wireless Network Connections

This article will describe how to configure Windows XP to manage your computer's wireless connection. Many computer manufacturers create their own wireless networking software utilities and install it on their machines from the factory. If you are having trouble connecting, it can be easier to troubleshoot the issue if you allow Windows to manage your connections. Since there are so many different, manufacturer-specific wireless interfaces, User Support Services does not provide support for any other utilities except the standard Windows interface.

Configure Apple Mac OS 10.5 to connect to "PSU Secure" wireless networks

Description:

This article describes how to configure the Mac operating system 10.5 (also known as Leopard) to connect to the secure wireless networks available on the PSU campus. For more information and directions for other operating systems and devices, please see this article.

How do I get internet access in my dorm room?

Internet access in your dorm room depends on the building you live in.

If you live in one of the historical buildings (Blackstone, King Albert, Montgomery, St. Helens, Stratford):

One ResNet2 high-speed internet connection is included in your rent.

How to connect to the PSU Secure wireless network

Description:

OIT currently maintains a secure wireless network on campus for students, guests, faculty and staff to use. This network will in no way eliminate the security risks associated with connecting your computer to the Internet but they will seriously reduce the number of potential attacks available to hackers with physical proximity to your computer while on campus. Additionally, using this system will embed your Odin login into your computer or handheld, alleviating the need to login to the Cisco Web Authentication site each time you connect to the network.

Configuring Windows Vista to connect to "PSU" wireless network

Description:

This article describes how to configure Windows Vista to connect to the basic wireless network, "PSU," available on the campus. These networks are not encrypted and offer basic access to the Internet to anyone with an Odin computer account, a Sponsored account or a Guest Wireless account.

Information about PSU Wireless Network Options

PSU offers wireless access through most of the academic and administrative buildings on campus.  Most laptops and wireless PDA devices can connect to our network.  To connect to the wireless network, you need a valid ODIN username and password or a temporary guest wireless login.

The easiest way to connect to our network is to connect to the unencrypted wireless network, "PSU."  Once your machine is connected to that network, open an internet browser such as IE, Firefox or Safari.  You will automatically be directed to our authentication page. Use your ODIN username and password to authenticate and you should be able to access the internet.

Non-secure wireless networking on Windows XP
Non-secure wireless networking for Windows Vista
Non-secure wireless networking on Macs

If you are having issues connecting, please contact the Helpdesk at 503-725-4357 or come visit us at SMSU Rm. 18.  Guests on campus can request short term access to the wireless network by visiting the Helpdesk in SMSU Rm. 18 with photo ID to get a temporary login.

Secure vs. non-secure networks:

PSU offers two types of wireless networks: encrypted (secure) and unencrypted (non-secure). Due to the nature of hardware available to users, not every device is compatible with the secured network. OIT recommends that users who are able to use the PSU secure wireless network should do so if they are concerned about security over-the-air. Selecting the secured option will require compatible hardware as well as manual software configuration. Users who do not wish to make the software changes required or have incompatible hardware for secure wireless should use the non-secure network.

What is the VPN Client?

What is the VPN Client?
The VPN Client is a tool that staff and faculty members can use if they need to access on-campus network resources from off campus. Usually these resources are protected by our network firewall, and therefore are blocked from off-campus usage or the PSU wireless network. Some of these resources include Banner access, remote desktop access, and I drive access for some database applications.

Configure Apple Mobile Devices for access to secure wireless networks

This article describes how to configure the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch mobile internet devices to connect to our secure wireless Internet connection in such a way that it stores your credentials on your device. You will no longer have to authenticate via the web interface (Cisco Web Authentication page) to gain wireless access while on campus. This is now the preferred wireless network to use on campus as it is more secure and easier to use once configured.
