How to Install and use the Cisco VPN Client: Windows

This article will describe how to obtain, set up, and use PSU's Cisco VPN client for Windows. What the VPN client does is to create a secure 'tunnel' through the internet from your computer to PSU servers, through which your network traffic passes. Your computer is assigned a PSU network address, and appears to the outside world as a computer on the PSU network. This allows you to use resources that are only accessible from the PSU network, such as Banner, or Remote Desktop connections to your work computer.

Enabling the F9 and F10 function keys in Internet Native Banner (INB) on Mac OS X versions 10.3 and 10.4

People often use the F9 and F10 keys to perform various functions in INB. If your Mac has OS X 10.3 or 10.4 then you may find that these keys do not work as expected. In Mac OS X 10.3, Apple introduced a new feature called Exposé which allows people to view all open windows as thumbnails. By default, Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 reserve the F9 and F10 as keyboard shortcuts for Exposé. In order to use these function keys in INB, you must change the shortcut keys associated with Exposé.

What is the VPN Client?
The VPN Client is a tool that staff and faculty members can use if they need to access on-campus network resources from off campus. Usually these resources are protected by our network firewall, and therefore are blocked from off-campus usage or the PSU wireless network. Some of these resources include Banner access, remote desktop access, and I drive access for some database applications.

What usernames and passwords are involved in using the VPN to connect to BANNER?

There are two accounts involved: your PSU Odin Account, and your BANNER account. You use your Odin Account name and password to connect to the PSU VPN. Then your BANNER account is used for access to the banner.pdx.edu web site and the BANNER application. Your BANNER account will not allow you to connect to the VPN, and your Odin Account will not allow you to connect to BANNER.
